Our Story

The story of barley use can be traced back thousands of years to the era of Hippocrates - known as the ‘Father Of Medicine’ - for his lasting contributions to the medical field.  Hippocrates recommended barley water, known as ptisane, to his patience as it was nutritious and easily digestible. He believed in the healing power of barley and thought of it as valuable in restoring health and balance to the body. Although named after one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine, the inspiration for HIP hits much closer to home.

In August of 2019, my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. My dad is the epitome of the philosophy of stoicism - tough, reasonable, calm and hyper collected. His philosophy to me growing up was always “pay your dues”. But he needed help - and I felt it was a duty of mine to step up and help my mother navigate all of this. He had his surgery in October of 2019 - but the recovery was going to be a long one. Not only that, in January of 2020 - well, we all know what happened. It was a tough time - My father was recovering from cancer, the world was in a state of full blown pandemic, and I had moved back into my parents basement at the age of 29 to help with the fallout of all of this.

Do what’s necessary.

So I created my own that was rooted in our love of philosophy. Soluble barley has been around for a long time. But HIP? HIP is different. HIP was created for those who do what’s necessary. The people who show up with their toolbox everyday and be useful, regardless circumstances. I made HIP for people like my dad. Today, my dad is cancer free and is doing just fine. He’s in his 70’s, and rides his bike like he’s training for the Tour de France. One day, I’d like to use a portion of these proceeds to really contribute to prostate cancer research in any way I can. But I’m still new, there’s a lot of ground to cover building an entire brand.

I guess I’ll just have to pay my dues.

Mike Tassone

HIP Alt. Coffee creator

Due to the surgery, my dad was unable to drink caffeine anymore. We’re Italian, and that was definitely a blow. We’d usually sit and drink a coffee with a muffin during my visits in previous years, but unfortunately no more caffeine. I remember him coming home one day with this yellow tub. It was ugly and looked like health food - but he seemed excited.

What is that?

Barley - soluble barley. It looked like coffee, smelled like coffee and even tasted like it. He mixed 2 scoops into a cup of hot water. With a couple of tweaks, it was delicious. Almost a 1:1 comparison to coffee. And it was extremely healthy, too. He explained to me the story of Italy after WWII. Italians and other Europeans would use soluble barley in replacement of coffee as it was hard to find & expensive after the war. And it had absolutely no caffeine. I did my research on barley, how Hippocrates and the stoics would use barley - even Spartan warriors used it as a diet staple -  and I fell in love with it. I myself have a bit of a sensitivity to caffeine these days - and the only brands that existed looked like hospital food. My dad needed something that reflected his resolve.

  • What Does It Taste Like?
We’d describe it as almost an exact 1:1 to coffee, just with a lighter taste.
  • Does It Have Caffeine?
We are proud to say it doesn’t contain one iota of caffeine
  • How Do I Make It?
You can make it as you would any coffee. Mix 2-3 tablespoons in with 8oz of hot water or milk as you run out of the door to conquer your day. Add in a drop of cream and sugar for a perfect “regular”. Whisk HIP with a few drops of water before you fully mix for a light cappuccino taste.
  • Where Does It Come From?
We source it from Italy where the finest barley in the world exists and package it right here in Canada.
  • What Is HIP Alt. Coffee?
HIP is one ingredient: 100% Organic imported Italian soluble barley. It looks like coffee & tastes like coffee, but isn’t coffee. It’s an Alt. Coffee!

FOUNDER STORY

HIP Alt. Coffee was inspired by the ancient wisdom of Hippocrates, the 'Father of Medicine,' who recognized the healing properties of barley. This connection to history became personal for Mike Tassone, the founder, in 2019 when his father Joe was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Known for his stoic philosophy and resilience, Mike's father had to give up caffeine after surgery—a significant change for an Italian family where coffee was a daily ritual. Not only that, the recovery had to happen during the Covid-19 pandemic. Not ideal.

During his recovery, Mike’s father utilized soluble barley, a caffeine-free alternative that resembled coffee in taste and aroma that was also heavily entrenched in old world Italian culture post- WWII. This discovery sparked Mike’s interest in barley's historical significance, from its use by Hippocrates to its role in Spartan warriors' diets. Recognizing the potential for a healthier coffee alternative, Mike created HIP Alt. Coffee, a brand rooted in resilience and the philosophy of doing what’s necessary.

HIP Alt. Coffee is more than just a beverage; it’s a tribute to those who show up every day and get the job done, no matter the circumstances. Today, Mike’s father is cancer-free and thriving, and the brand stands as a symbol of strength and perseverance. With a future goal of contributing to prostate cancer research, HIP Alt. Coffee embodies Mike's commitment to health, history, and doing what needs to be done.
